Breadwinner - sourdough bagels from the stone oven

our favourite travel provisions for the journey home
Walking through Amsterdam’s Jordaan district, a little sustenance is just what you need.
At Breadwinner, hand-rolled sourdough bagels fresh from the stone oven are baked with organic ingredients.
In the small, bright shop with a handful of seats outside, we have our choice of plain sourdough bagels, salted, poppy seed or sesame, onion bagels, jalapeno and cheddar, or two sweet options: cinnamon-raisin or chocolate.
On request, they can be topped with pastrami, salmon, cream cheese, avocado, as a BLT, or in a Greek style with feta.
Paired with a really good drip coffee, it’s a perfect combination.
Breadwinner’s sweet shop is tucked away in the trendy Jordaan, always worth a stroll.
This historic neighborhood, once home to 17th-century craftsmen and workers, is among the most picturesque parts of the canal belt.
Amsterdam’s canal system, with its narrow houses and quaint bridges, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. So wandering through the Jordaan quarter is simply beautiful.
Due to the scale of the old buildings, Breadwinner’s interior is modest in size.
For those who can’t snag a seat outside, everything is available to-go, making it the ideal foundation for a picnic or an excellent snack for a lazy afternoon at home.
And there’s also a second location in the Museum Quarter, just around the corner from the Rijksmuseum.
This spot, too, has only a handful of seats - but some of the most beautiful picnic spots right outside the door.
We personally have found comfort in these delicious bagels as travel provisions, easing the bittersweet farewell to Amsterdam.
