Central Hotel & Café – Copenhagen’s tiniest hotel

Exterior view of the narrow Central Hotel & Café in Copenhagen. The two-story building features a rooftop sign, green shutters on the upper floor, and red metal chairs at tables on the sidewalk out front.

in short…

  • just one bedroom in this cute hotel in Vesterbro

  • delicious breakfast included – served in the hotel’s own café

  • luxury like at the big ones – Aesop toiletries in the bathroom and a complimentary welcome drink

“I can recommend a cute little hotel.”

Whenever someone states this, they usually mean a hotel with twelve, perhaps fifteen rooms.

When we say that we love the tiny Hotel Central on Tullinsgade, we really do mean tiny!

A hotel room with green patterned wallpaper, wooden flooring, and a patterned rug. A bed is visible on the left, a small desk stands in the center, and a window with a windowsill, vase, and flowers is on the right.

There’s just one room here, perched above a charming mini café.

When we’re lucky enough to get this room booked for our stay in Copenhagen, it’s always a very special treat, because every luxury is on offer in this smallest of spaces, topped off with a very personal touch and plenty of warmth.

A black rotary wall phone, a digital radio with wood finish, a small metal desk calendar, and a tabletop mirror stand on wooden shelves against green patterned wallpaper.

Arriving at the Central Hotel & Café in Vesterbro, right on the border with Frederiksberg, already feels like coming home, because here Copenhagen still belongs entirely to the locals.

The relaxed Jah Izakaya is in the neighbourhood, as is the amazing restaurant Sanchez, which we love so much.

And whilst strolling through the streets, we never fail to return to the hotel laden with bags from Sakura.

But our first stop is, of course, Café Central, where we’re handed the keys to their only hotel room along with a welcome drink.

An iced coffee with a red-and-white straw, an orange cold drink, a glass vase with flowers, and a room key with a metal tag reading Eleanor Home lie on a wooden table.

A super-friendly team takes turns working in the café, serving not only the hotel guests but also the neighbourhood with cakes, sandwiches, milkshakes and coffee.

Every morning we’re treated to a lovingly prepared breakfast here, and we can even choose the time for it the day before (heavenly for a mild morning grouch like me).

A set wooden table with orange juice, granola, boiled eggs, and ham on plates. In the background, two female staff members stand behind a dark coffee counter.

The mood at this place is always cheerful, and whichever member of the team isn’t on duty tends to sit in the pretty café as a guest themselves.

To reach our room under the roof at Tullinsgade 1, we climb a steep staircase just to the left of the café and enter through a narrow door.

A narrow hallway with wood paneling and green patterned wallpaper. Built-in white cabinets are on the left, a padded green leather door is straight ahead. Black clogs sit on a wooden step.

The space could hardly be more perfectly optimised. There are built-in wardrobes that easily swallow up our luggage, a small table with two stools under the window overlooking the street (which can be folded away to create more space), a queen-size bed beneath a skylight and even a lovely writing desk.

An illuminated wooden desk inside a nook with green patterned wallpaper. A notebook and sunglasses lie on the desktop. In front of it, a shaped wooden seat is fixed to a metal frame.

Tasteful wood panelling and wallpaper, a carpet and fabrics in warm colours, along with carefully selected antiques, pictures and fresh flowers, make the room incredibly homely.

A double bed with white linens and a patterned throw blanket on wooden floors. Two illuminated reading lamps flank the headboard against green patterned wallpaper with framed artwork.

The bathroom isn’t large, of course, in this Danish miniature house, but it’s fitted with beautiful English taps and ceramics and stocked with fragrant products from Aesop.

A bathroom with white wall tiles, a white sink, and dark tiled flooring. A narrow shower niche with fixtures and white towels on a rack are visible.
A white sink with two silver faucets against white tiles. Amber Aesop dispenser bottles sit in a niche, with hairbrushes and glasses on a glass shelf above.

Everything clearly shows just how much joy the owner takes in running this unique hotel.

We really appreciate this and can only recommend booking well in advance of your next visit to Copenhagen - so that you too can stay at the Central Hotel & Café.

A square, white-wrapped bar soap with red lettering reading Central Hotel & Cafe Soap København sits on the edge of a white basin above the silver drain.
