Chez Fritz - Petit Fritz’s big brother

People sit closely at tables in front of Chez Fritz restaurant in Munich, under large umbrellas and trees, dining by candlelight on a summer night.

In front of St. Johannes Church, Preysingstraße opens up into a small square.

Beneath large linden trees, at wooden tables with red-and-white checkered tablecloths, we love to sit here on a mild summer evening.

Freshly cooked prawns on ice are arranged around a small bowl of sauce, served on a red-and-white checkered tablecloth.

The atmosphere is both elegantly French and profondément détendu - deeply relaxed, right in the heart of Haidhausen.

The old quarter east of the Isar or „on the right side of the Isar”, as the locals matter-of-factly say, has a village-like charm with its narrow lanes and quiet corners.

You’ll find old houses, cosy little squares and no shortage of charming cafés and independent shops.

The large, half-moon-shaped Orleansplatz, the long, leafy Bordeauxplatz and the many streets named after French cities and personalities have earned Haidhausen its nickname “The French Quarter”.

Which makes it all the more fitting that one of our favourite neighbourhood spots, Chez Fritz, serves up exactly the kind of French food we love.

Unpretentious yet refined, this charming French classic combines the best of fine cuisine with a bohemian ease.

Inside, the atmosphere resembles a Parisian brasserie - more checkered tables, set closely together, an old wooden bar against white tiled walls, warm lighting and super charming guys with suspenders on their aprons.

Beef tartare with caper berry, cream and mustard is served on a white plate next to crispy fries in a metal cup.

Like its little sibling, Petit Fritz, this big brother serves up delights like steak tartare, crevettes rosé, oysters and more delicious French bites.

But here, you’ll also find dishes that are a bit more elaborate, as you’d expect from the “big brother” - braised meats, duck leg, coq au vin, half lobster or blood sausage with mashed potatoes.

As always, it’s best to book in advance, for the grander sibling is prepared to greet you in style.
