Petit Fritz - Munich’s little French Gem

“Pas de réservation – simplement s’y rendre” reads the Petit Fritz website.

And that’s exactly how it is here -just show up!

This unpretentious French bistro is the charming little sibling of the refined Chez Fritz.

We can drop by any time, where cozy tables await, serving up unfussy French delights.

For petit déjeuner on the weekends, we love croque madame, pain perdu, or a croissant with café au lait.

In the evening, we gather with friends over crevettes rosé, moules frites, and tartines with duck rillettes, paired with a glass of crémant.

A casual alternative

The elegant Chez Fritz has long been a staple in Haidhausen, our go-to for refined dining when we’re ready for something a bit more indulgent. And it’s always worth it.

But how wonderful that Petit Fritz offers a more casual version with the same quality touch.

And how delightful to slip into France for a few hours anytime we like.

Curtains up for an evening in Paris

Right in Schwabing on Hohenzollernstraße, we step through a rich burgundy velvet curtain and find ourselves in Paris.

Fresh oysters rest in charming wooden crates and swiftly make their way onto our plates.

Five oysters on ice with lemon wedges and shallot sauce on a plate, served with bread basket, water glass and ceramic mug on a set table.

The varieties of the day is chalked in white on blackboards.

The small room is filled with bistro chairs and marble-topped tables, while a long bar stretches toward the back, leading to an Art Deco-inspired nook with cozy armchairs and a sofa.

Bar with dark wood, shelf of bottles and drinks on the counter, hanging wine rack above, two guests seated at the bar.

From here, we watch as wine bottles are opened at the bar and steak tartare is prepared.

Occasional flames leap from the Green Egg grill as a fresh entrecôte is laid on the grate or a few sausages are grilled to crispy perfection.

Le chemin de fer

At the very back, Petit Fritz opens into a narrow, elongated room and it is surprisingly more spacious than the “Petit” in its name might suggest.

Set table with candle in front of mirrored wall with small tables and pink lampshades in the back area of a restaurant.

Seated on the caramel colored leather bench or at the tiny two-person tables beneath quaint red lamps, we can’t help but feel a touch of the legendary Orient Express atmosphere.

From here, we have a perfect view of the kitchen door swinging open and shut, as large bowls of crispy pommes frites, steaming fish soup, and toasted tartines with an array of delectable toppings make their way to the tables. Not to mention the tempting little plates of mousse au chocolat.

A spoonful of chocolate mousse with sea salt on a white plate, served at Petit Fritz restaurant in Munich.

Rich butter and generous portions may derail any thoughts of dieting, but they instantly transport us to a state of pure culinary indulgence.

And as we finally emerge, happy and satisfied, from the thick velvet curtain, it’s always a slight surprise to find ourselves back in the heart of Munich.
