Coffee Box - the best coffee in the smallest space

Two women are seated on wooden chairs under a parasol outside Coffee Box café in Munich’s Haidhausen district.

The Oxford dictionary defines a box as a “rectangular container” – which might sound a bit too uncharismatic to describe the small cubic space of Coffee Box in Haidhausen.

However, the example provided: “…a practical box for your lunch break…”.

That feels much more fitting for this cozy spot.

Located just a stone’s throw from Wiener Platz, the Coffee Box is indeed tiny.

Yet, within its few square meters, we find everything a coffee lover could wish for during a break – perfectly creamy cappuccino, delicious sweet and savory pastries, homemade lemonade and a generous dose of warmth and hospitality.

A round café table holds a Franzbrötchen, a slice of pound cake, two glasses of water, black coffee, and a cappuccino with latte art.

Nicole and Alex opened the Coffee Box together as a couple.

Whenever we stop by, they radiate joy in their work and are incredibly friendly.

Nicole, who grew up in Haidhausen, knows the locals and has a loyal customer base – which we’re happy to count ourselves among.

Alex, originally from Israel, is likely responsible for the tasty treats like the tahini cookies or the babka and chocolate-filled rugelach. Both share a passion for great coffee.

When we order a slice of delicious banana bread with a black filter coffee, it’s a given at Coffee Box that we get to choose the flavor profile we prefer – fruity and mild or bold and nutty?

The ever-changing coffee selection often comes from Merchant & Friends, an organic roastery based in the idyllic Glonn, just outside Munich.

Nicole and Alex also sell the charming colorful ceramic cups that make our coffee experience here so delightful.

On top of this they have cool thermal mugs. So, if none of the four stools inside or the small tables outside are free, we can easily take our coffee to go and enjoy it in the nearby Maximilian meadows.
