The best specialty coffee at Munich’s markets
Sweetspot, Suuapinga & Standl 20
“Da wo’s an Kaffee gibt,” (where there is coffee), boasts Standl 20 at the Elisabethmarkt.
And in typical Bavarian confidence, that’s their way of saying – this is where you’ll find the only true coffee.
In Munich, you can actually enjoy this coffee experience not just here, but at three lovely market locations, each offering a slice of the most delightful market atmosphere.
If you love sipping your coffee while watching the city wake up, these Specialty Coffee spots will surely make you happy.
Lively market buzz and morning coffee indulgence
Munich has three permanent markets right in the city center.
The Viktualienmarkt, established in 1807, is the largest and probably the most famous of them all, located in the Altstadt.
The smaller market at Wiener Platz, from 1889, feels quaint and picturesque.
The Elisabethmarkt, built in 1903 and nestled in Schwabing, is having recently completed a lengthy renovation and is the least touristy.
However, it’s deeply loved by Munich locals, especially the Schwabing crowd, who frequent it regularly.
All three markets share a unique atmosphere: a mix of bustling activity and a countryside-like calm.
Admittedly, on a sunny Saturday morning at Viktualienmarkt, you may need to find that calm within yourself.
Yet, there’s something so peaceful and beautiful about mornings when the Bärenbrunnen fountain at Elisabethmarkt, the Fischerbuberl fountain at Wiener Platz, or the eight fountains of Viktualienmarkt gently splash away as the flower stalls roll up their shutters.
And to our great fortune, these three Munich markets share another delightful trait – three small coffee havens!
Suuapinga at Wienerplatz
Suuapinga, with one of its Munich locations in the wooden hut at Wiener Platz, was founded by three friends from Schwabing.
It serves up Specialty Coffee for true coffee lovers, along with cinnamon and cardamom buns.
Standl 20
At Standl 20 on Elisabethmarkt, the cappuccino is so good that we gladly cycle all the way to Schwabing.
Sweetspot
And at Sweet Spot, a smile greets us not only at the bottom of our coffee cup.
We also smile contentedly, gazing over the rim of our cup and through the creamy cappuccino foam at the Heilig-Geist-Kirche at Viktualienmarkt, as the morning sun glints off the tower of the Alte Peter.
