Pärlans Konfektyr – a traditional Caramel Specialist Shop
„It’s a caramel specialist shop in Stockholm” – that was the first thing we heard about Pärlans.
A caramel specialist?!? That could only mean a little slice of heaven made of cream, butter and sugar.
And that’s exactly what it is.
You’ll find this charming little shop on Nytorgsgatan in Södermalm.
The dark green awnings, adorned with the elegant Pärlans lettering, can already be spotted from Nytorget Park.
Through the large front windows, the shop unfolds in two parts . On the right, is a retro-style interior from the 1930s, with lovingly wrapped caramels and pralines.
On the left is a glass-walled kitchen where soft serve ice cream is made in a vintage machine discovered in Italy.
The velvety swirl is topped with homemade caramel sauces, caramelised popcorn and your choice of sprinkles.
In the 1930s, caramels – especially around Christmas – were Sweden’s most beloved sweet.
Back then, they were made with just a few natural ingredients, cooked in copper kettles, then hand-cut and wrapped.
And that’s exactly the spirit Pärlans wanted to bring back when they opened their doors at Nytorgsgatan 34.
It didn’t take long for demand to outgrow the pace of hand-wrapping, so they added a vintage candy-wrapping machine from the 1950s to lend a hand.
Today, a chocolate-coating machine helps dip the caramels - everything else remains handmade.
The base recipe - cream, butter and sugar, is only paired with natural flavours - vanilla sea salt, licorice, pistachio or apple-cinnamon - sold as pralines, bars (with or without chocolate), sauces or popcorn.
Everything is beautifully packaged, always with a touch of 1930s nostalgia.
The wrappers are sustainably produced in a Swedish paper factory.
And as we can happily confirm, Pärlans keeps its promise:
“Our products come with a promise that the outside will be just as tasteful as the inside.”
These beautiful sweets make the perfect gift - not only at Christmas.
