Bergstrands Bageri - tiny bakery with great pastries

A wooden counter at Bergstrands Bageri in Stockholm, displaying various baked goods including cinnamon buns and cardamom buns lined up on baking sheets and in baskets.

in short…

  • a pleasant archipelago atmosphere, right in the heart of Vasastan

  • Swedish classics - from cardamom buns to Princess cake

  • all handmade - from heirloom grains and with a real passion for the product

Puff pastries filled with custard or red berries, yeast buns with cinnamon sugar and cardamom, meringues, punch rolls or the bright green Swedish Princess Cake, which was invented especially for Princess Margaretha and her sisters in the 1930s – all of these delicacies are temptingly displayed in Bergstrands Bageri.

The tiny shop is known among Stockholmers as a „Hål i väggen“ - a hole in the wall.

This only adds to its charm, of course, as the few seats inside the shop are snug and right in the thick of things.

Outside, there are a few more seats in front of the beautiful old building on the corner of Frejgatan and Västmannagatan.

On cooler days, lambskins and woollen blankets are laid out there, so it’s just as cosy right outside Bergstrands’ door.

Tobias Bergstrand had for some time been running a bakery on Utö in the stunning archipelago south of Stockholm.

That’s where he met Sara.

Together with her, he then opened the little bakery in the city, right in the heart of Vasastan.

And they’ve brought a little of the island’s relaxed atmosphere right along with them.

Everything they sell in their bakery is handmade.

The jam is preserved in-house (it tastes just as good as a cake filling as it does on Bergstrand’s bread), the vanilla cream is freshly whipped and of course they bake everything on-site in their bakery.

Running a family business where everything is selected and produced with love is a matter close to Sara and Tobias’s hearts.

They carefully choose all the ingredients and for their wonderful crusty bread, they like to use ancient grain varieties such as Öland wheat or emmer.

Organic eggs, homemade granola, jams, freshly squeezed juices and generously stuffed sandwiches are also available to take away.

Of course, it’s even nicer to bring a little time with you and simply enjoy the good Bergstrand’s coffee and a pastry on site in a laidback archipelago kind of way.
