Lillebrors Bageri – Cardamom Sugar and Custard

in short…

  • well worth the queue - the little bakery in Vasastan is one of the best in Stockholm

  • a handful of outdoor seats allow us to linger awhile with a cup of coffee

  • and make sure not to miss the heavenly pastry rolls with vanilla cream!

Whenever we suspect that a queue outside a shop is more of an Instagram thing than actually worth the effort, we usually make a beeline for somewhere else.

A group of people queueing on the sidewalk outside the entrance door of Lillebrors Bageri. Climbing plants and an awning are attached to the building facade.

We can tell straight away, though, from the constant queue outside the little Lillebrors bakery that it’ll be worth the time.

“Krämbullar med vaniljgrädde” - pastry rolls with vanilla cream - these are the delightful treats we can already see in the hands of those leaving the bakery.

Lightly dusted with sugar and flavoured with cardamom, Lillebrors’ version is arguably the most delicious of their kind in Sweden’s capital.

Two baking sheets with fresh pastries. Cardamom buns (Kardemummabullar) are in the foreground, behind which stand cream-filled buns dusted with powdered sugar (Krämbullar) being picked up with tongs by two hands.

Alongside these are crusty sourdough loaves, croissants with a thousand flaky, buttery layers and the very best cardamom buns - all well worth the wait.

Lillebrors has just slipped into our „Cafés“ category.

Because, to be fair, we have to admit that the Bageri essentially consists of the bakery itself and the pretty wooden counter, and so might perhaps fit better into our „Favourite Shops“ category.

A long glass display counter filled with various bread rolls, cinnamon buns, and filled pastries. Behind it, bakery staff in white shirts are working, with a tall rack trolley holding baking sheets visible in the background.

However, there is that one bar table bolted to the facade and a few small benches, which allow us to linger for a while with Lillebrors’ filter coffee and a krämbullar.

And then, of course, the wait outside the door is already part of the visit.

The bakers, who have been skilfully twisting one yeast bun after another for ten years now, are used to the hundred pairs of eyes from those in the queue resting on them.

And how better to shorten the waiting time than by watching as fresh batches of dough are repeatedly shoved into the oven?

So this charming little Bageri on Rörstrandsgatan has rightly earned its place among our favourite bakeries, even those with larger cafés.

Either way, anyone who loves pastries and finds themselves in Vasastan should definitely pop in here.

A saleswoman in a white t-shirt uses tongs to pack pastries from a glass display case into a paper bag. The counter displays various buns, rolls, and loaves of bread, with a wooden shelf holding bread and a baking oven in the background.

If, of all days, it happens to be a Monday, Lillebrors is unfortunately closed.

But it’s a real consolation that Berstrands Bageri is just a quarter of an hour’s walk away. And they’ve got plenty of delicious treats on offer even on Mondays.
