Trio – a German Tavern, reimagined
in short…
if you like Otto, you’ll like it here too
traditional German cooking – reimagined with a passion for the product
we love the flavours that take us back to our childhood - now enhanced with a woodruff spritz
Königsberger Klopse, rollmops, eggs in mustard sauce, crackling schmalz, homemade eggnog or jelly and cream… doesn’t that sound wonderfully old-fashioned, just like a meal at your grandparents’ house?
Right in the heart of Berlin, not far from Alexanderplatz, you can find all of this – yet it’s actually not in the least bit dusty.
Behind the Trio’s elegant, curved 1920s facade, a casual, horseshoe-shaped bar takes centre stage.
We can always find a seat on the wooden stools, even without a reservation.
It’s even more comfy to sit at the bright red tables by the windows – though it’s worth booking in advance, as the Trio is very popular.
The trio behind Trio are Eva Alken, Clemens Roesch and Vadim Otto Ursus.
They had already won our hearts at Otto on Odersbergerstraße.
And it’s just the same here at Linienstraße 13.
Anyone who has ever taken a closer look at German cuisine knows that there is a huge range of regional specialities, from kale with Pinkel sausage, to Palatinate Saumagen or Swabian Spätzle, right through to Munich’s Weißwurst.
In most cases, our European neighbours have also had a considerable influence.
Even if the people of the Saarland are reluctant to concede to the Alsatians that they invented Flammbrot. And the Viennese raise an eyebrow in annoyance when their schnitzel is attributed to Bavarian cuisine.
At Trio, regional quibbles play no part.
Szeged goulash sits alongside Handkäs mit Musik and Russian eggs alongside beetroot salad. There’s Krakauer sausage with mustard or bone marrow broth with semolina dumplings.
The breaded chicken with potato and cucumber salad can easily hold its own compared to the Hendl in Austria.
And the Königsberger Klopse, served with a generous mound of mashed potato, disappear into my stomach, evoking the delights of my childhood.
This goes wonderfully with a Heidenpeters beer brewed in Berlin or a woodruff spritz.
„Peach Dream“ is the name of an ice cream with raspberries and peach, which comes across more unpretentious than the name might suggest. But in terms of flavour, it really is simply a dream – hardly surprising, given that all the ingredients at Trio are selected with love and prepared with heart.
And it’s served with plenty of friendliness.
