Ferm Living - Interior Style from Copenhagen

Open wooden doors reveal the Ferm Living store on Paper Island in Copenhagen, warmly lit at night with interior design shelves and two white metal chairs in front.

in short…

  • Trine Andersen's gorgeous showroom in the historic brick building on Kuglegårdsvej

  • delicate glass, oiled wood, brass, ceramics - Ferm uses only the most refined materials

  • also on our own table - the Ripple glasses and carafes

Copenhagen keeps surprising us with some of the best food we could ever wish for.

It seems to be a quiet superpower of the Danish capital to outshine others when it comes to taste.

But just as renowned is Denmark’s knack for interiors.

“Hygge,” the Danish word for a sense of cozy well-being, has long travelled across languages and borders.

Less known, perhaps, is the expression “ferm på fingrene,” meaning “skilled with one’s hands.”

That’s exactly where the name of the beautiful interiors brand Ferm Living comes from.

Natural Tones and Fine Fabrics

Craftsmanship made simple – is the guiding principle of Scandinavian design.

And at Ferm, it’s perfectly put into practice, using only the most beautiful materials and colours: ribbed glass, oiled wood, brass, ceramic in natural tones, organic cotton or recycled paper all belong to the brand’s elegant repertoire.

Ferm’s fabulous flagship store is the perfect setting for its in-house design.

It’s housed in an old brick building nestled between Christiania and Nyhavn.

The elongated house front opens toward the canal-dotted quarter, while the rear reveals a peaceful green courtyard.

Creative director and founder Trine Andersen has transformed the historic building into a showroom so beautiful, we wouldn’t mind moving in ourselves.

Trine’s Wallpaper

Originally trained as a graphic designer, she began her career running her own agency.

Privately though, her heart had always belonged to interiors.

And while she had plenty of choice in the Scandinavian design paradise, she still struggled to find a wallpaper that matched her taste. So, she simply designed her own.

She took her wallpaper to a home fair in Berlin – and it practically flew off the shelves.

From there, everything began to fall into place.

Clients wanted cushions to match, throws, table linen.

Hygge to Take Home

Step by step, she began designing her own line of home goods and in 2006, founded Ferm Living.

To our great delight – because we’re true fans, especially of the Ferm accessories.

Vases, mirrors, tablecloths, ceramics, and most of all those beautifully ribbed glasses and carafes are essential in our own home.

So it’s no surprise that every visit to the Ferm House on Kuglegårdsvej in Copenhagen feels a bit like coming home.

By the way, if we get a little hungry after our Ferm stroll, Broens Gadekøkken with its wonderful food trucks is located just across the small bridge on the other side of the water. There, the circle of good Danish taste of every kind closes for us once again.
