Käfer Deli - exquisite Patisserie and Chocolaterie
The beautiful corner building at the edge of Bogenhausen’s villa district has been home to Feinkost Käfer, a Munich delicatessen icon, since 1933.
A refined restaurant on the first floor, a cozy bistro with a garden below and in between, like in a hobbit hole, stairs up and down, are the finest gourmet delights.
What captivates us most, however, is the in-house patisserie, decked out in sugar-baker white, presenting the most beautiful tarts and cakes.
The dainty “Oh La La” cake, in soft pink, is adorned with three pastel-colored macarons.
It melts in your mouth, tasting of strawberries and champagne.
The macarons change frequently - sometimes it’s lemon, blueberry and rose and other times salted caramel, pistachio and bourbon vanilla.
We always look forward to finding (or inventing) an occasion to enjoy this little masterpiece and guess the macaron flavors.
Of course, the pink delight is just one of many tempting cakes and pastries.
The scent of chocolate fills the air, as the pralines are made in the master kitchen, separated only by a glass wall.
Another favorite, the blueberry cheesecake, is entirely coated in luscious chocolate.
Crispy flat tarts topped with raspberries (which are always breathtakingly delicious and beautiful year-round) or fileted oranges, mangoes or seasonal strawberries and rhubarb, often find their way to our coffee table.
It remains a mystery to us how, even if there are rare leftovers, these tarts never become soggy, despite the generous vanilla cream spread on the shortcrust base beneath the fruit.
In late summer, when the Zwetschgendatschi (plum cake) is on offer, we always add a big dollop of cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon to bask in cake heaven.
Käfer’s Datschi is undoubtedly one of the best in Bavaria.
We could go on and on about Munich’s cake paradise, but instead, we suggest you visit yourself and perhaps enjoy a slice right away in the bistro garden.
